Turmeric and Black Pepper Tincture: Extracted in 40% Organic Alcohol

Turmeric, an orange-colored spice imported from India, is part the ginger family and has been a staple in Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian cooking for thousands of years.

In addition, and Chinese medicines utilize turmeric to clear infections and inflammations on the inside and outside of the body. But beyond the holistic health community, Western medical practitioners have only recently come on board in recognizing the health benefits of turmeric.

Here are some of the ways turmeric may benefit your body.

Blocking cancer

Doctors at UCLA found that curcumin, the main component in turmeric, appeared to block an enzyme that promotes the growth of head and neck cancer.

In that study, 21 subjects with head and neck cancers chewed two tablets containing 1,000 milligrams of curcumin. An independent lab in Maryland evaluated the results and found that the cancer-promoting enzymes in the patients’ mouths were inhibited by the curcumin and thus prevented from advancing the spread of the malignant cells.

Powerful antioxidant

The University of Maryland’s Medical Center also states that turmeric’s powerful antioxidant properties fight cancer-causing free radicals, reducing or preventing some of the damage they can cause.

While more research is necessary, early studies have indicated that curcumin may help prevent or treat several types of cancer including prostate, skin and colon.

Potent anti-inflammatory

Dr. Randy J. Horwitz, the medical director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine and an assistant professor of clinical medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, wrote a paper for the American Academy of Pain Management in which he discussed the health benefits of turmeric.

“Turmeric is one of the most potent natural anti-inflammatories available,” Horwitz states in the paper.

Osteoarthritis pain relief

Turmeric may also be helpful with another type of arthritis. Some research has shown that taking turmeric extract can ease the pain of osteoarthritis. In one study, reports WebMD, turmeric worked about as well as ibuprofen for relieving osteoarthritis pain.

Indigestion and heartburn aid

Curcumin works with the gallbladder, stimulating it to make bile, which may help with digestion. In Germany, turmeric can be prescribed for digestive problems. Some research shows that turmeric may help upset stomach, bloating and gas. Turmeric may also help reduce the occurrence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in people who are otherwise healthy.

Heart disease

Studies have suggested curcumin may help prevent the buildup of plaque that can clog arteries and lead to heart attacks and strokes.

Spilanthes Tincture: Dried Flower Extracted in 40% Organic Alcohol

We make our tinctue using 2 species of Spilanthes and Fresh flowerheads whch are rich in spilanthol, the active ingredient proposed to be responsible for most of its biological activity.

The alkamide “spilanthol” is most commonly used to treat toothache, throat and gum infections and will also temporarily act as a anathesia to deaden tooth pain while its bacteria fighting action fights tooth decay.

Take a few drops, swish around in your mouth,  you will begin to salivicate….wildly and begin to experience a “buzzing” sensation as your nerve endings become excited, your circulation increases and the power of the herb diffuses throught your mouth and gums. Your saliva contains antibacterial compounds that help protect your teeth and gums and combined with the strong bacteria fighting action of spilanthes this tincture is popular for helping to fight tooth decay.

Traditionally spilanthes has many uses that have been screened and authenticated by reasearchers in vivo and in vitro.  Research has demonstrated its antibacterial properties and in vitro tests have demonstrated its strong effect against;

  • E.coli

  • Pseudomonas

  • Salmonella

  • Klebisella pneumonae

  • Staphyloccus albus

  • Growth of Candida albicans.

Based on these actions it may also be effective in treating cold and flu  infections, viral infections such as herpes& cold sores, parasitic infections, and fungal or yeast infections causing ringworm, athlete’s foot, jock itch and vaginal infections.

An extra bonus is its potential for decreasing facial wrinkles by reducing muscle tension. It has also been proported  as an aphrodisiac and rumor has it there is a drink at Haru’s in New York called “Electriquila,” (or “Electric Eel”), a cocktail featuring the “buzz” of spilanthes in a traditional margarita reciepe and a few other additions.

Vanilla Extract: Cured and dried beans extracted in 40% organic alcohol

The sweet vanilla orchid flower must be hand pollinated as the solitary bee that was the         only pollinator is thought to be extinct in the world. Every morning between the early hours of 7-9am, when the pollen is most receptive, we put on our bee suits and hand pollinate each flower. It is tricky pollination, a skill that needs to be honed for good pollen transfer. This allows for a large bean to develop.

Pollination usually takes place on our farm from approximately April to June… rain or shine. This year we hand pollinated 7153 blooms and will see what our success rate is when we harvest the beans.

The beans grow for about 9 months and are individually harvested when exhibiting signs of maturity. We then expose the beans to sun for several hours every day for 7 days, wrapping them in towels to sweat at night. The beans are then carefully dried and stored in air tight containers for up to 1 year or more so the vanillin crystals and their deep intoxicating flavor. Beans are sorted according to size, the largest sold for whole bean and others made into extract using 40% organic high quality vodka.
